Inspiration, balance and recognition: What contractors want from assignments

Finding a client that inspires them and allows them to pursue a good work-life balance are two of the most important factors for contractors looking for their next assignment, new research suggests.

A survey carried out by Sodexo Engage asked workers what they want most from the roles that they apply for, with almost half (48 per cent) of those questioned saying that a work-life balance is important for them. For limited company contractors, this is something that should be part and parcel of their working style, but it's great to have clients that support this.

Meanwhile, more than one-third (36 per cent) of poll respondents said they wanted to work for a company that had an active recognition programme for its workers, as this helped to motivate them in their role.

One in three workers also said they wanted to be part of an inspiring work environment when completing assignments in person at their site, while one in five contractors said they thought it was important that their clients incorporated them as part of their wider team, fostering a positive spirit.

However, the overall most important factor that job candidates wanted to see from the businesses that they applied for roles with was corporate social responsibility.

Iain Thomson, Director of Incentives and Recognition at Sodexo Engage, commented: "In an increasingly competitive jobs market, business leaders can't afford to underestimate the importance of creating an inspiring workplace.

"At a time when job hopping is increasingly common, it is essential that businesses start assessing what they can do to inspire their workforce. Creating a good work-life balance ... and offering rewards they they truly value are just two of the many ways they can achieve this."

At the other end of the spectrum, 39 per cent of survey respondents said they felt demotivated if recognition of their work was not shown, while 25 per cent were put off from doing their best by poor management at the client's end.
