If you are legally required, or otherwise, would like to register your company for VAT, this page explains just how simple it is and the steps involved in doing so. This is just a guide and we do encourage you to contact your dedicated accounts team should you have any further questions and to receive tailored advice.

VAT Registration Process

To register your company for VAT, firstly, please complete the VAT registration form. You can then send it to PayStream who can submit the application to HMRC on your behalf.

HMRC will then review your application and either register your limited company for VAT or request further information from you. The full process usually takes HMRC 6-8 weeks to complete, once completed you'll receive your Certificate of VAT Registration which will confirm your VAT registration number and other details. When received please send a copy to PayStream, either via post or on an email to your dedicated accounts team.

Once registered you will need to notify any clients and agencies your business works with the company is now VAT registered and provide them with the VAT number and a copy of the certificate. They will then be able to start paying VAT on your invoices. If the effective date of VAT registration has been backdated by HMRC you may be required to amend any previous invoices or send a backdated VAT invoice.

VAT Registration Options

Following your registration you may also consider the different VAT registration options and schemes available to you. Most small businesses will operate under what is known as the Cash Accounting scheme to help with cash flow. Some small businesses will decide to register for Flat Rate VAT to ease the administration involved with record keeping for VAT. Your dedicated accounts team can talk you through all the details of these options and other useful hints and tips in respect of being VAT registered allowing you to decide what is right and best for you and your business.

VAT Returns

On a quarterly basis PayStream will send you your VAT workings and return, you can then review the figures, make payment to HMRC for the VAT liability and on your instruction, PayStream will submit your VAT return to HMRC on your company’s behalf.
