Individuals who are in a position to choose their own working hours, such as limited company contractors and freelancers, typically enjoy a better quality of life than those who are contracted to work set hours by their employers.
This is one of the findings of new research carried out by Family Friendly Working Scotland to coincide with National Work Life Week, which took place across the UK between Monday October 2nd and Friday October 6th.
The week-long event was designed to raise awareness of the different ways that people strive towards their own version of the perfect work-life balance, with Scots valuing the ability to choose their own working hours.
How Scots feel about flexible working hours
The research found that almost half (49 per cent) of Scottish workers believe their quality of life would be improved if they were allowed to choose their own start and finish time each day - something that limited company contractors, freelancers and other self-employed individuals are able to do.
What's more, 21 per cent of respondents said being able to reduce their working hours would be extremely valuable, with 53 per cent admitting that they now make sure a job offers the option of working flexibly before applying for it.
But this wouldn't have to be a concern for workers if they took full control of their career and decided to go it alone as a contractor or freelancer, which would provide them with the ultimate flexibility over their hours, workload and even pay.
Nikki Slowey, Joint Programme Director for Family Friendly Working Scotland, commented: "Too many people still think working flexibly is about mothers and part-time work. But our latest research to mark National Work Life Week shows this assumption is outdated.
"The ability to work flexibly is wanted by men and women and is sought after by workers of all ages - parents and non-parents alike.
"Many just want small changes, such as amending their start or finish time, or having occasional time off for family emergencies, deliveries and school events."
The benefits of choosing your own working hours
It is clear from the research that workers value being able to pick their own start, finish and break times each day, as it allows them to build a work-life balance that suits their individual circumstances. In fact, this is why many people choose to become limited company contractors in the first place.
This greater flexibility thanks to increased control means that contractors can create their own perfect work-life balance that gives them more time to focus on assignments at the best times for them, while spending time with their loved ones or on other personal commitments when they need to.
In order to get the most from this power, working as a limited company contractor and utilising the services of PayStream's limited company accountancy service, My PSC, can be a huge help. My PSC is there to provide contractors with support and advice on the administrative side of running their own limited company.
This means they can spend their working hours - at whatever time of day or night that may be - focusing 100 per cent on completing their assignments and can relax in their spare time knowing that their limited company is in safe hands, staying compliant with HMRC, and ultimately putting contractors' minds at rest, helping to improve their quality of life.
