If you have periods when you've worked abroad, been unemployed or ill and not in employment you may find that you do not qualify for the full range of state benefits like the Retirement Pension because of an insufficiency of National Insurance Contributions.

You can then decide if you want to fill those gaps by making what are known as Class 3: voluntary contributions. They will help you make sure you qualify for the full basic and new State Pension.
