HMRC is warning customers of scam telephone calls claiming to be from HMRC which are asking for bank account details and personal information as a means to receive tax refunds or demand funds for any unpaid tax bills.

The other telephone scam HMRC is making its customers aware of is a recorded message, again claiming to be from HMRC, which mentions that HMRC is filing a lawsuit against the individual.

The individual is then asked to phone 0161 850 8494 and press "1" to speak to a HMRC official who will deal with the case. This telephone scam, which looks to be pursuing older individuals, has been reported online at 'whocalledme'. HMRC has asked any individuals who have received the message to please not respond.

HMRC regards the security of its customers as highly important and asks that if you cannot validate the identity of the individual making the call you should never reveal any personal details. They also ask that you report any suspicious calls to Action Fraud. You can contact them on 0300 123 2050 from Monday to Friday between 09:00 - 18:00. Please note this number will be charged at your normal network rate.
