The latest jobless figures show a welcome rise in employment in the UK and it appears there is some added good news for umbrella company contractors and other freelance workers.

According to the Office for National Statistics, there was an average of 473,0000 unfilled vacancies in the three months to August 2012

This was up 5,000 on the quarter and 14,000 on the year, suggesting there is a great deal of unfulfilled demand for people with the right skills.

Figures from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation indicate that contractors in IT, healthcare and engineering sectors are those with the most sought-after skill set.

Employment minister Mark Hoban says: "British businesses deserve great credit for continuing to create jobs even in these tough economic times, and now we have one million more people working in the private sector than in May 2010."
