Top 20 most in-demand contractor skills revealed

Limited Company
Blockchain, content strategy and augmented reality have been named among the top 20 skills for today's limited company contractors and freelancers to possess in a new report.

Freelancer site Upwork has released a list of the skills that saw the biggest increases in demand and popularity in the first quarter of 2018, with knowledge of blockchain coming out on top, followed by an understanding of the TensorFlow software in second place, and experience using Amazon DynamoDB in third.

Voiceover and subtitling skills took fourth and fifth place on the list respectively, while knowledge of art direction came in sixth, content strategy in seventh and computer vision in eighth.

Completing the top ten were Microsoft Power BI skills in ninth place, and augmented reality expertise in tenth.

Also featured in the top 20 were chatbot development skills (11th place), media buying (13th), information security (15th) and machine learning (19th).

From this list, it is clear to see that limited company contractors and freelancers with specific tech skills are set to be in high demand in the near future as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into everyday processes.

Meanwhile, the growth in demand for freelancers with information security expertise is likely to be due to the upcoming introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which has forced businesses to strengthen their processes in this area.

Stephane Kasriel, Chief Executive Officer at Upwork, and Co-Chair of the World Economic Forum's Council on the Future of Gender, Education and Work, commented: "As skills become more specialised, companies either need to invest in reskilling to prepare workers for the jobs of tomorrow, or leverage freelance professionals who are nearly twice as likely as traditional employees to proactively take reskilling upon themselves.

"Many of today's Fortune 500 companies are already doing this, and adoption of flexible workers will increase as hiring gets harder."
