IT skills found lacking in UK organisations
30/07/2010
Limited company contractors working in the IT sector could play a valuable role in filling skills gaps among the UK's large companies.

A survey carried out by consultancy firm Xantus has found that there are some key skill shortages within the country's IT departments.

Almost half of chief information officers (CIOs) in firms with a turnover of between £250 million and £1 billion believe skills are lacking.

Of those questioned, 43 per cent reported difficulty in sourcing traditional IT skills such as strategy and infrastructure, while 41 per cent said they wanted more business and management skills within their IT departments.

"For most organisations, IT is a critical part of the core infrastructure, so CIOs recognise that IT decisions are strategic for the whole business and not just their department," said Steve Watmough, chief executive of Xantus.

According to the report, IT skills shortages are costing businesses more than ten per cent in departmental performance and productivity.

The warning comes after the UK Commission for Employment and Skills called for a radical reform of the country's skillset to ensure that Britain keeps its place in the world economic rankings.
