Contracting could benefit 1 in 7 who report poor work-life balance

Contracting could provide a new lease of life and a better balance between professional and personal commitments for the one in seven UK workers who are unhappy with their current work-life balance, according to a recent survey.

A YouGov poll carried out as part of last week's National Work-Life Week found that workers aged between 25 and 34 are most likely to report dissatisfaction with their work-life balance, smallbusiness.co.uk reports.

A total of 41 per cent of respondents in this age group revealed they often felt pressured to work outside of 'normal' hours.

Younger workers still have many years of their career ahead of them, so making the move to becoming a personal service company contractor or freelancer could help them to achieve a more satisfying work-life balance for the remainder of their working life.

YouGov's survey also found that 43 per cent of UK workers regularly send emails outside of their contracted hours, which encroaches on the time they are able to spend with their loved ones or to simply enjoy some free time to themselves.

However, contractors can choose their own working hours and have the power to prioritise their own workloads, which means they can be online at the times when they are most likely to need to respond to emails, but spend other parts of their day on assignments or have them as time for personal commitments.

Limited company contractors are also in charge of setting their own expectations, so they can let their clients know at what times of day (or night) they will be available to respond to queries via email or speak on their phone. This means workers shouldn't ever feel under pressure to work extra hours and compromise their balance between work and life.

Speaking to smallbusiness.co.uk, Managing Director of My Voucher Codes Chris Reilly offered his advice for achieving a healthy work-life balance.

"The top thing to consider when finding a work-life balance is making sure that you plan your day or even week ahead," he advised.

"Keep a diary and plan your deadlines, what you need to do and how you can achieve them. This will help you to keep a clear mind."
